First Fold Records Showcase

First Fold are having a live showcase on rhubarb radio's beatsuite next Wednesday night.

There will be an electronic jam from the Fold's inhouse band, Nations Shall Rise, as well as myself mixing up a selection of eerie tunes as a Taster for my upcoming release. The Fold have a range of new material dropping in the Autumn, including a royal compilation of Fold beats, so stay tuned for that one.

I have been working for the label for some time on the new visual branding - nice to see it all coming together - expect to see more of the Plague Docter and the fold designs throughout the website, releases & press soon

Creature is soon upon us! My monsters are currently promoting Open Beats & Rehash's collaborative arts/beats event. Myself, Kipp and the others are busy spreading the word and organising what looks set to be a dope event.

On the night we will have a variety of art, design & illustration work on display from Birmingham's institute of Design, plus live illustration from top local graffers, banners, projections and a live break dancing battle from Bboy attic. On top of the visual stuff we have Cumbria's finest electronic breaks band, Digitalis, giving a live set! And Local spinner, the Docter plus myself (royal) and skeleton dropping tunes. It's all a fundraiser for our final year show.

Flatpack Festival

I have been working on a sub project for Flatpack festival, alongside my fellow creatives Tommy and Sarah. We designed screen interface visuals used for an interactive projection in the main festival space. The projection was used as a fun noticeboard of comments - whereby people at the festival could text in messages and pictures through their phone's wi-fi.

We worked on the Lucid project alongside Charlie at Screen Media Lab and Jerome & Ian from User Lab, all of which did lots of complicated programing to turn our designs into working screen visuals!

The moving designs featured a variety of old fashioned comical characters and street scenes that pop up and slide in and out of the landscapes. An influence in the aesthetic was classic Monty Python / Terry Gilliam collages, and all images were taken of and from Birmingham sources.

Really pleased with the final designs, and great to see them up at such an innovative creative event - there were some awesome films shown at Flatpack this year! Above images are courtesy of Sarah.

Got a new residency starting on Saturday at Fly Life. Stoked to be on the rota. They hosted some top names last year such as The Nextmen, Bugz in The Attic, The Qemists and the Dub Pistols. This Sat 10th will be a free party down at the Rainbow Pub/courtyard to kick it off again.

Chav Scum Kills God

Public Enemy

We were lucky enough to catch the one UK date of Public Enemy's tour... absolutely sick!!! Chuck D and Flava Flav stormed the stage for about 2 and a half hours of raw, live hip hop. They're getting on for 50 and still rocking the crowds with a ton of energy. A lot of words of wisdom, fat beats and pretty much an entire play out of It takes a Nation of Millions' Album which - now 20 years old and still sounding fresh. One of my all time heroes, Chuck is still on point.

Mad Hat Rave!

Here's the flyer I made advertising the 1210/open beats warehouse party that happened last fri. Kipp, Alex F and Sarah all had input into this design, it took us a while to come up with something we liked. It is slightly nuts, the hat itself was originally an acid crazed sorting hat from Harry Potter.

The event was a massive success, brilliant to fill up the warehouse. Some awesome hats were rocked, and my King costume was definately worth it.

I have just collaborated with Smile again, and produced a couple of t shirt designs for their Type Attire project at Plus. They are illustrations on the plus theme of 'hybrid' - one being a mutant squid and the other a very hungry type eating monster. The shirts will be auctioned off as prizes alongside shirts by Jonathan Barnbrook, Airside's Jamie Wieck and other interesting people that were at plus festival.

Been hectic working at Plus all week (www.youplusus.net), which is a design festival held in Birmingham. Met some nice people and saw some great work. Highlights included Clusta's light boxes, Airside and Jonathan Barnbrook's talks (despite the heckling!), Andrew Spackman's spinning gizmos, stone carving and more of Illuminate's pretty lights.

Baskerville the Animated Movie

I have been working on a scene for Baskerville alongside the rest of the type drawer team - Tommy Morrison, Sarah Carter and Howie Barker, as well as Ben Merrick who made an appearance as Baskerville himself. It is a scene wherby some of Baskerville's great printing achievements are explained.

Freakin Roach Campaign

This is some work from a uni micro project. My idea was this - to take Zoo York (a skate, lifestyle and clothing company) and further enhance some of its brand values. In this case I tried to associate the company further with street/graff art and its related subcultures by holding a graff event and publicising it to the target audiences. The messages encoded with the campaign are that of something uber cool, niche, collectable, and in-the-know. That's what led to the idea of roach vinyl toys and mock up collabs with street artists.

Zoo freakin York!

I've been putting some research into Zoo York skate/lifestyle and clothing co for a uni micro project. It's a while since I properly checked these guys out and they've been getting quite big especially over the last couple of years. This cockroach ad campaign is crazy though, may be it's slightly cruel but it's god damn memorable! They have basically decided the cockroach is the perfect character to resemble the hard and gritty New York street persona, and have played the little bugs up in different ads.

The heaviest one is this - they get hold of hundreds of cockroaches, spray the ZY tag on the back of each wriggling little bug, chuck them in backbacks among the team and go spread them literally across the city! A proper anarchist little video, kind of evil but also brilliant.

Thursday went to catch the last Birmingham showing of 'If I cover my nose you can't see me,' by Brummy lyricist Polarbear. It was an awesome showing at the Rep theatre, and he held the crowd still with his very personal and detailed spoken visuals. Out in the foyer, the Leicester Illustrator and graff artist Goonism filled up canvases with his signiture clean paint marker art alongside some more spoken work and later a bit of down tempo hiphop. A class bit of culture, you'd be wise to check these guys out in the future. Cheers to goon for the threads!

Finished Mural

I went in to Addenbrookes Hospital, in Cambridge, last week to paint the finished mural design for the teenage ward. It took a couple of long days to complete but I'm really pleased with the results! Everyone on the ward seemed chuffed to have something bright and fresh up. The designs are featured on the front page of the hospital website and are also going to featured in a Cambridge newspaper.

Here's a couple of pics from the DJ Qbert gig a couple of weeks ago. He was absolutely sick, and scratched his heart out! Technically super-sharp on every single trick, but also rocked some brilliant records. A good laugh playing for secret wars on the beach with skeleton, and a massive compliment to warm up the crowd for such a world legend.

Dublin Visit

Just been in Ireland for a couple of days and visited the Irish museum of modern art whilst I was there. Some really good stuff on show, but the stuff that particularly caught my eye was the large painted work by Janaina Tschape, a German/Brazilian artist. She also had a number of interesting photography pieces on show, a couple of which were also on show at the Gallery in Walsall a while back.

Addenbrookes Mural

I've been drafting more alternatives for the mural at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge. Some of the teenagers were shown the mock ups and they decided they liked one of the original pieces with the two characters (see a few entries below), but wanted more going on. They also liked some of the pattern work I came up with in a later version and suggested a combination of the two - they wanted a multi-coloured conversation between both characters. Here's the final mock up for the wall. Hoping the final piece ends up looking similar!

Myself and Kipp are the newest members of the Secret wars family. Stoked to be in the crew! Last Saturday's fat battles featured Phil Blake, Bussy, Agent and Monk. Good art was observed and good brews were consumed. Much respect goes out to Slobodan and Seeds who clearly put a lot into making the wars a success.

Look out for more beats from Royal and Skeleton soon - we are lucky enough to be holding down the beach with secret wars at the Rainbow warehouse, on Sep 13th, for Dj Qbert - one of the world's most amazing turntablists!

Street Art at the Tate

A couple of weeks ago me and rainbow girl visited the street art exhibition at the Tate. There was some awsome work - painted and pasted right across the iconic building. Great to see some exciting artists getting recognised, particularly blu who I'm a big fan of, also El Tono and Nuria's spiral designs on parts of the walking tour. New to me is Sixeart from Barcelona (far left), but I really loved that as well. Shame the walking tour was a bit thin on the ground and nothing related inside the tate itself, but overall worth a visit.

My other reason for going was to fill up on some research for brand identities - the event was sponsored by Nissan Qashqai; of which the street art was supposed to add some reflected glory onto. The car itself is yet another boring, bland, samey silver looking car, but the brand identity being built up around it by Nissan is one of exciting urban visual references. It's been a great research example of branding's visual power - because the product itself reflects very little of the brand identity.

Hospital Mural

I have been commissioned to paint a mural - along a wall in the teenage ward at Addenbrooke's hospital (Cambridge). They are after a graffiti (dare I say 'Urban'?) style so that the teenage patients have something nicer to hang around other than the fresh ABC decor in the children's wing. Health and safety doesn't allow the use of conventional spray paints so it will probably be a mixture of sponge stencils, block emulsion and a paint pen... possibly a couple of water based cans too if i can get hold of them.

Massimo Vignelli was a clever boy

Whether it is intentional or not, a signage system that covers a city tends to end up branding the city. Design intended to make sure people get from A to B smoothly is normally made to be simple and legible, with large amounts of information carefully deconstructed into bite size pieces. Maps and other information graphics always look and feel radically different between varying cities; which in turn adds to the individual brand aesthetic of the city as a whole.

I went to New York last year, and did lots of obvious tourist stuff, but the thing that visually stuck in my mind was the subway system graphics. The bright block colour circles, the space between objects and of course helvetica. And as for the map - it's pretty cool. A tangle of colours, each weaving in and out of different spots of the city.

Although I think it is aesthetically good looking, I couldn't help thinking it could be much more simple; parts of it are incredibly confusing. Downtown Manhattan is so full of routes and colours that you have to study it for some time when first working out your subway routes.

Unlike London's Underground map, New York's is much more geographically accurate. London's map is not laid out very closely to the actual locations of each stop - but condensed and heavily simplified in order to fit huge amounts of info into one place and keep it legible. In comparison New York's map is much harder to read, because so many lines swirl in and out past each other in different places.

What I found interesting though is that when Massimo Vignelli originally designed the map, in 1972, it was a logical set of routes - that did not carefully follow the exact geography of New York. It meant it was clearer, simpler and more straightforward. Each route ran at 45 and 90 degree angles only and was well ahead of it's time compared to the version that followed it four years later.

Vignelli's original map was unpopular because it didn't follow the already firmly ordered street layout of Manhattan and the geography of the city. For example, Central Park was condensed into a small grey square in the 1972 version, when in reality it is a very tall rectangle.

Given the choice I'd have the 1972 version. But the existing map is still awesome.

London Midland Trains - a half arsed brand identity

When Central trains were bought out by London Midland a few months back, they were really slow to change over the station graphics, pamphlet designs and everything else that brands the company. I catch the train in Brum regularly, so I watched while the change over happened - and the only thing that did change (apart from perhaps more delays) was the design. It's been around 9 months or so by now, and still only about half the trains seem to have been repainted. I think London Midland (apart from having a stupid name for a company that seems to operate far more in Birmingham, than London) are pretty sloppy about getting their brand about!

This is a ticket machine at the Bourneville Station. It was covered in the old Central Trains colour scheme and still had the logo stuck accross the top. Recently they finally got around to putting up the London Midland logo instead - on a tatty, torn print out. It ripped a bit but don't worry - they carefully secured
it in place with a bit of sellotape.

The Big Chill

Had an awesome time at The Big Chill, down by Eastnore castle! Highlights included catching (God like gems) the Mighty boosh, hot 8 brass band, a James Brown tribute with a couple of the old JB's including Fred Wesley himself(!), Thievery Corporation, Roots Manuva, Vadim, Bill Bailey, Mr Scruff, Caspa & Rusko, the Bays... the list goes on! Not a bad bit of sun, and the £20 tent didnt blow away!

Blu - Tate Modern

For those who aren't already aware, Blu is an amazing street artist from Bologna, his stuff is brilliant. He's been painting massive murals in unusual places for years but I think this may be his biggest break so far - the whole side of the Tate Modern! I need to go and see this soon.....

I was reading Rainbow gir's blog earlier (http://sarahgraphics.blogspot.com/) and she showed us some cool new car transfers from John Burgerman. Well he's also just announced some super cool covers are being made for the i-phone with imprinted characters. Pretty Sweet, he's got his doodles on so much product at the moment! And with good reason.
